‘The Hit Girl’ Asha Parekh Was Conferred With Dada Saheb Phalke Award

She is a retired Indian actress who started her career when she was 10. She delivered commercially successful films with Bollywood’s leading heroes between the 1950s to 1970s. Born on 2 October 1942, Actress Asha Parekh began her career as a child artist in the film Aasmaan. In 1952, filmmaker Bimal Roy cast the 10-year-old Asha Parekh in the film Maa.


Guess Asha Parekh’s nicknames? Tomboy and Jubilee! She was commonly known as Jubilee Girl, as most of her films celebrated silver jubilee at the box office.


Education also held importance in Asha Parekh’s life. She took a break after a few films, to complete her studies and returned to Hindi cinema as the lead actress in Nasir Husain’s Dil Dekhe Dekho in 1959, which also starred Shammi Kapoor.   


Asha Parekh and Nasir Hussain’s cinematic partnership delivered many hits–Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Teesri Manzil, Baharon Ke Sapne, Pyar Ka Mausam, and Caravan.

Asha Parekh didn’t limit herself to acting in only Hindi films. She worked in Punjabi, Gujarati, and Kannada films.

She has worked in over 95 films and was the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification from 1998 to 2001. Ms. Parekh is also the recipient of the Padma Shri in 1992 for her services to the Indian cinema. 


Asha Parekh, who had ruled Bollywood for several years, did not get married. According to her, it was her nature that did not let anyone ask for her hand in marriage. She confessed about being in love with someone, and like most love stories, hers seems to be an incomplete one.


Ms. Parekh runs a dance academy, Kara Bhavan. She also has the Asha Parekh Hospital in Mumbai, named after her for her contribution.   


During her tenure as the President of the Cine Artists’ Association, Asha Parekh was criticized for censoring films; especially for not giving clearance to film director Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth.


Asha Parekh’s favorite singer is Asha Bhosle.
